Focus charting

Focus charting is a type of nursing documentation which includes four categories, the focus, data, action and response. In the focus category, the nurse writes about his/her focus problem on a specific client. This includes the nursing diagnosis such as Ineffective Airway Clearance related to retained secretions. Then, the data will support the one that you have written in the focus. For example, that you have written Ineffective Airway Clearance, the data that you can write is the respiratory rate, (which happens to be abnormal), (+) productive cough (write the consistency, color,), presence of pallor and cyanosis, and also the Oxygen Saturation. Take note that in focus charting we avoid data's that are not related to the focus. That's why it was called FOCUS charting because you need to FOCUS on the problem itself.

In the action category, you need to write what are the actions you have done to the client. It is also important that you need to align your action to your data. For example, I wrote Respiratory Rate of 37 breaths per minute, beside it, you can write "Monitored vital signs especially Respiratory Rate." Then, I also wrote (+) productive cough with color of whitish and thick consistency. You can write "Assessed client's cough and sputum; Noted for the color and consistency of the sputum."

In the response corner, you will write what was the client’s response to your intervention. For example, the client stated. "My cough was decreased and I can breath as clear as now." After that, your signature must be displayed “Juan Dela Cruz, R.N.”.

The advantage of focus charting is it’s in the holistic emphasis on the client and priorities were ease in charting. It easily identifies critical client issues; facilitates communication among all disciplines; improves time efficiency in documentation; improves concise entries that would not duplicate client’s information that was already in the information/flow sheet/checklist.

The guidelines in FDAR includes: Focus charting must be evident every shift; it must be patient-oriented not nursing task-oriented; you must indicate date and time on the first column; separate the topic words from the body notes, Focus in the second column, data, action and response on the third column.

Some of the hospital provides five columns to be more specified. “Date/time” first column, “Focus” second column, “Data” third column, “Action” fourth column, Response at last column.

I hope I helped my colleagues out there. Be the best nurse by being competent together with the character. Godbless!

Ja Rule Will Embrace the Life as a Prisoner

After 2 years in the incident of gun possession, Ja Rule has been guilty and will be punished for 2 years in jail.  Talking with a low down voice, Ja Rule said not anything beyond "guilty" and "yes" to judge of Manhattan that questions him as he admitted to a charge that involves attempting to have a loaded gun A .40-caliber semiautomatic gun founded in a back door of the police in his $250,000-plus Maybach after it was stopped up for speeding.

Ja Rule was sentenced for about 2 years term compared to the 15 year period if he was charged of original gun accuse. Imagine how long will Ja Rule stay to Jail if it was an original gun accuse. His career will fall down instantly. The prosecutors’ request to ban Ja Rule from possessing gun for 10 years which had been declined by the Toronto judge. Ja Rule was fined for $1,200.

Lil Wayne was separately arrested the same night and also pleaded with guilty.

Ja Rule made different hits like “Between Me and You”, with Christina Millian, “I’m real”(Murder Remix) with Jennifer Lopez, “Always on Time” and “Mesmerize” with Ashanti, “Wonderful” with R. Kelly and Ashanti. Also his songs made it to the top 20 of the US billboard Hot 100 which implies that he was a promoter of R and B hits.

Ja Rule was born at Queen in New York with a religion of Jehovah’s Witness. His sister died with respiratory complication leaving him as the only child in the family. His famous album scored by Grammy award in 2002 as best rap album namely “Pain is Love.” This album includes “Living it Up”, “Im Real (Murder Remix)”, “Always on Time” and “Down Ass Bitch”.

After the event, the rappers should be free of obtaining guns to prevent this incident again. This incident serves that the law suits everyone even if you are famous. White is white, black is black meaning when you are right then you should be rewarded and if you are wrong you should be punished. I know that rappers break the rules but not this one. This is a serious case and can ruin you for the rest of your life. In other words, stay simple, follow and live life longer. Even Ja Rule displayed that he was wrong, still he accepts the punishment after the situation he had. Stay famous, stay on top with the law above your ego.

Vikings Stadium Collapse

Due to the heavy snow, the roof of the Vikings stadium collapse related to the roof’s deficiency plus the snowstorm that strike Midwest. The Sunday’s NFL game between Minneapolis Vikings and New York Giants was postponed. Vikings said that the reason was unsafe conditions related to the Metrodome roof and weather.

The Viking’s fans will very disappointed about this incident. They would like to see them fighting at the Vikings stadium. What were the Viking’s fans would be? If I would be them, I will wait and explain further to other fans what happened and this was a huge unexpected event.

The Giants were trapped at Kansas City International Airport on Saturday, incapable to go to Minnesota due to the snow, said team spokesman Peter John-Baptiste.

Blizzard was unexpected but one factor of weather changed was global warming. Due to the use of technologies as of today, it massively increases the temperature causing to provide abnormality to the weather. The Mother Nature needs to be protected by the one who were in use to her. The responsibility of each and every people is to help Mother Nature by closing all your lights for an hour. It is not for me guys it is for all of us. Let's help each other to prevent this kind of events.

Elizabeth Edwards funeral open to public after the battle against cancer

After Elizabeth Edwards died against cancer, she became an inspiration especially to those cancer patients. With all the respect, Elizabeth was the wife of the former presidential candidate John Edwards. The 61 year old Elizabeth Edwards passed away last Tuesday, December 7, 2010.

“I tell you I think she was an inspiration to everyone who knew her even if she didn’t touch you and that’s how I feel about her and why I want to campaign my response today.” said by Judith Bullock, Raleigh Resident.

After that incident, people should know the importance of fighting. Living with believing and the passion to do what you want to do even though your life will be finished at the specific time. Elizabeth Edwards proved that life will be meaningful with determination. She did not stop supporting his husband in campaigns as well as she fought against cancer. Imagine can you try to fight cancer for 6 years?

I remember when I am caring with cancer patients in this so called tumor clinic. I realized that this disease will provide you too much pain due to chemotherapies. Some takes 3 to 5 cycles of chemotherapy. Admitted to hospital just to finish one cycle of chemotherapy was very annoying and also it will take you to spend money. Some of my previous clients need to get an earlier reservation for the room that they will stay in and the bad news is if there is no available, better luck next time. If you’d assess them, you will finally see their overused veins and sometimes this veins were destroyed and changing their vital signs. When I took the blood pressure of this cancer patient, the korotkoff sounds was too weak and also the pulse of this client. Too many cut downs were made to some of cancer patients. That’s why my two hands were up to the great Elizabeth Edwards.

To all of the cancer patients here like Elizabeth Edwards, do not stop believing, keep on moving. Life is always a cycle and it always ends with death. The only problem you will undergo before you reach this death is you will decide to be happy or not. Do the best that you can. Do what you want to do. Do what you believe into. And someday, some other time, other will realize that has been the best among others. For those who were rich, please donate to the people in need especially cancer patients. God bless to all who keeps on giving and sharing others.

Last Remembrance - Batch 5

What a great experience with my colleagues. The event was so memorable with full of happiness. Each and everyone smiled all time long. Even though, half of our batch was absent. They were called as "KJ's" or kill joy because they believe that life is full of sacrifice and life is unfair. We swim all night, cook all night and drink all night. The water was so cold that's why some of us did not stay long. We also sang even we were not a singer (except for the one who was a member of a choir).

Remember the days that we were on the orientation? We were doing some jokes and listening to a non-energetic lecturer, also the lecturer who came from Visayas? Did you get it Bats(batch) five? That was so memorable then after that orientation, we were exposed to different wards with different headaches as well. As time goes on, we cannot focus on the time-span until it was December 10, 2010.

It was a blessed day. All of us will have a big problem after that volunteer program. Some will go being a customer service representative and some will rest for just a month. December month, meaning no hiring at all. Will someone help us here?

Batch 5 will stay as the best. We believe that we build the most memorable experience especially to the staff of that hospital by being friendly to them and most of all being professional. I hope this was the beginning of this remembrance so that it will not be the last one. Thanks to all of you

A 6 month volunteer nurse

After my 6 months of training in a tertiary hospital, I realize that life was always unfair. I am working 8 hours a day, sweating all day with no pay at all. I realize that I am serving the people and the country for free and with that I shall name myself as a martyr. Believe me I hated this one. I do not want to happen this again. After I studied for four years this was all I have. After I encountered too much viruses, bacterias and other pathogenic microorganism, I realize that being a volunteer should be stop all ready.

Yeah, I got professional and mastered skills right now. With the help of the hospital and of course me and this confidence that they are talking about. Now, with this experience I believe that I can become a staff nurse. I can do whatever it takes to become one. I have the qualities, abilities and attitude. I possessed the eleven core competencies in providing nursing standards. I would like to thank my hospital who accepts me to be there. Thank you!

In becoming a nurse, I asked myself right now. Why did I took this course? After my dad sponsored me for about half a million the prize was this. Too many registered nurses here at Philippines with no work at all. Some of them are working as Call boys or Call girls. In short, they are working as call center agents. Well, can you connect nursing to a customer care representative? I have studied microbiology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biochemistry and of course nursing subjects. Will I forget all of this just to earn P12,000 to P20,000 a month?

Honestly I do not want to leave Philippines. But because of the poverty I will do it. If I am the one who will answer the problem of family then why not? I am not the only one who is suffering here. Too many of my colleagues are also unemployed. There family invested half a million pesos just to pursue their sons/daughters as a nurse. But here in the Philippines, hospital will make money to the unemployed nurses using their trainings, volunteer experiences and others. The government does not want to take action on these one. I know that the supply of nurse here was too many or too bulky but the point is the government should help us take out of the country if there is no opportunity here. Well this profession is hopeless. So for all the student nurses out there from the Philippines, think thrice, not twice and goodluck to all of you.

Scrumptious Lemonade

My brother and I went to a mall last Sunday. I bought slippers for him and walk around the mall for a couple hours. We walk and see the newest things such as shoes, clothes and foods. We saw different new arrived summer clothes. After a couple of hours, we agreed to eat in a restaurant. We decided to go at “Sbarro”. I ordered two slices of Cheese Pizza, Half order of Spaghetti with tomato sauce and two of their special lemonade. The pizza has a thick layer. I was not amazed by their spaghetti, because the taste wasn’t good enough. The sauce was tasted like water colored with red. But when I first tasted the lemonade, it felt really good and awesome. Even I was disappointed by the spaghetti; the lemonade covered my emotions with happiness. I was shocked by the flavor of it that was so fruity. I can say that it was 100% fruit taste. I think that the ingredient used was a real lemon. How I wish I could make some for myself.

Well, when I am having a zip to the lemonade, my body was refreshed all ready. My hair in my arms tends to move upward due to the great taste of it. I honestly like to go back their just for that lemonade. Even my younger brother was amazed by the unique taste of it. First, he even tried to ignore and ask to change the drinks that I have ordered. He wants to change it with a soft drinks or something. But when he started having a zip of it, he started to question what it was. He was amazed by the real fruity flavor just like me.

Someday I promise to go back their. I always imagine the taste of it. I hope you’ll try it also.

Case Study: Introduction and Definition

Case study refers to the collection and presentation of detailed information about a particular participant or small group, frequently including the accounts of subjects themselves. A form of qualitative descriptive research, the case study looks intensely at an individual or small participant pool, drawing conclusions only about that participant or group and only in that specific context. Researchers do not focus on the discovery of a universal, generalizable truth, nor do they typically look for cause-effect relationships; instead, emphasis is placed on exploration and description.

Case studies typically examine the interplay of all variables in order to provide as complete an understanding of an event or situation as possible. This type of comprehensive understanding is arrived at through a process known as thick description, which involves an in-depth description of the entity being evaluated, the circumstances under which it is used, the characteristics of the people involved in it, and the nature of the community in which it is located. Thick description also involves interpreting the meaning of demographic and descriptive data such as cultural norms and mores, community values, ingrained attitudes, and motives.

Unlike quantitative methods of research, like the survey, which focus on the questions of who, what, where, how much, and how many, and archival analysis, which often situates the participant in some form of historical context, case studies are the preferred strategy when how or why questions are asked. Likewise, they are the preferred method when the researcher has little control over the events, and when there is a contemporary focus within a real life context. In addition, unlike more specifically directed experiments, case studies require a problem that seeks a holistic understanding of the event or situation in question using inductive logic--reasoning from specific to more general terms.

In scholarly circles, case studies are frequently discussed within the context of qualitative research and naturalistic inquiry. Case studies are often referred to interchangeably with ethnography, field study, and participant observation. The underlying philosophical assumptions in the case are similar to these types of qualitative research because each takes place in a natural setting (such as a classroom, neighborhood, or private home), and strives for a more holistic interpretation of the event or situation under study.

Unlike more statistically-based studies which search for quantifiable data, the goal of a case study is to offer new variables and questions for further research. F.H. Giddings, a sociologist in the early part of the century, compares statistical methods to the case study "on the basis that the former are concerned with the distribution of a particular trait, or a small number of traits, in a population, whereas the case study is concerned with the whole variety of traits to be found in a particular instance"

I started my day with a jogging. I jog around for about 1 hour starting from 6am to 7am. The weather was so refreshing; the heat was covered by a nice and smooth wind. Parents also jog around it and after a while, they play badminton to boost their stamina and burn excess fats.

This jogging exercise can enhance you physically especially skeletal muscles. This muscles that are targeted with this exercise are chest, shoulder, upper and lower legs and feet. Abs can also be, in terms of breathing. Pain is necessary for starters, after a day you’ll experience extreme pain in terms of the cycle of your jogging. A running president, Nicanor Perlas, when he start to campaign as a running president here in the Philippines, he avoid to drink water after by reason of enhancing stamina. He was an athlete before, and he learned it when at the practice before the Olympics.

Some teens today are not into exercise. They like to play no-sweat activities which can be a cause of certain diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. The exercise can also prevent teens from involving in a prohibited act like drugs. As an author, I prefer to exercise rather than to be involved in drugs. Drugs are disease-causing object for me and it has no advantage at all. I know its addicting, but this feeling should be overcome by the user after he realized that it’s definitely wrong. Parents concern all the time about their children. As a parent, no one in this world would like to see their children become a bad or miserable human after all. Parents love to see their children succeeding and having a great family in the future. Parents do not stop supporting your child for a good reason. And for the children out there, think about the future and think how you will make your parents proud about you.

Thanks to all of you, maybe I provide good information here. Happy blogging!

Reaction to the movie “Tatarin”

Tatarin was a movie showing the discrimination between the two sexes, men and women. The men have a high power than the women because if you became a wife, then you are already been bought by the men. But the story continues, the San Juan fiesta came to change the status of the two sexes. The discrimination changes because the women give their bodies through sexual intercourse and they control men from that.
My reaction to the movie is boring but I have learned something. The moral on that movie is it should not have discriminations on men and women because the two sexes must be equal by power and decision-makings. It was boring because too many sexual intercourses were made. It only shows that the movie emphasize that sex is the major target of the movie. As a viewer, we always view the point of the movie but if it was emphasizing other topics, it can affect the attentiveness of the audience. The setting and the characters was great. The effects of the sounds were evident and touching. Characters act as a really good actor and actresses showing different personalities that I would love the most. They portray good and showing the real personalities written by Nick Joaquin. The setting was change, in Nick Joaquin’s story, the setting was only one day but here, it took a week or weeks. But the places were good and were related to Nick Joaquin. I have learned that not all chances are with me, and I am not lucky at all times. Someday, I will feel hatred and sadness within me because life is like a wheel, sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down. Just always remember, every human has its own equilibrium in terms of rights. Fight for your right, fight what is right.

Ouch my muscle aches after a day in the gym. I feel like my muscles were tearing. My left upper forearm cannot extend to its maximum range. Part of workout, is a lot of pain. I know that thousands of session should be made after I return to my slim body. I try to do biceps, triceps, chest and abdomen (abs) building. It makes me feel so much pain after that day. One factor that I consider why I am so much in pain is because of being a beginner.

I try to have more of this patience and passion to workout because as I always see in the mirror, my fats are obscene. I want to have a body physically fit. With 6 packed abs on it and with different obvious muscular cuts. Some girls hate to see fat guys. They love to see muscular guys rather than stout guys. Well, working out is not easy especially if you are not dedicated to do it. Many teenagers forget about working out or playing sports. Due to the new technology, personal computers and Playstation, teens prefer to play with these rather than sports or workout. And with that, many diseases are widely spreading such as diabetes, heart disease, cancers and the like. Looking at specific diseases, the risk of dying from cancer increased 45% for men and 28% for women due to lack of physical activity. The risk of dying from respiratory ailments was 92% higher for men and 75% higher for women. The risk of dying from heart disease was 52% higher for men and 28% higher for women,

I just shared the day of my workout. Hopefully I gave you health information about this one and I want also to share this post to people who stay at home sitting for a long day. Your body and muscles need to work out. Though some of people do not want to undergo sweating but definitely it is needed. So keep sweating for a good reason, to live longer and happy. Do not just stay at home, go for workout.

Useful Therapies

Art therapy is the use of art to help resolve conflicts and promote self-awareness through non-verbal media. Art therapy is also a form of expressive therapy that uses art materials, such as paints, chalk and markers. Art therapy combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of the different art materials.

As a mental health profession, art therapy is employed in many clinical settings with diverse populations. Art therapy can be found in non-clinical settings as well, such as in art studios and in workshops that focus on creativity development. Art therapists work with children, adolescents, and adults and provide services to individuals, couples, families, groups, and communities.

Music therapy is the use of music in a defined structure to bring about change and promote self-organization, social connection, and expression. Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a qualified professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

In other words, music therapy is the use of music by a trained professional to achieve therapeutic goals. Goal areas include, but are not limited to, motor skills, social/interpersonal development, cognitive development, self-awareness, and spiritual enhancement. Music therapy is now an established health service similar to occupational therapy and physical therapy. Music therapists use music to facilitate changes that are non-musical in nature. The use of music for those with arthritis provides opportunity for pain relief, anxiety and stress reduction and positive changes in both mood and emotional state.

Music therapists are found in nearly every area of the helping professions. Some commonly found practices include developmental work (communication, motor skills, etc.) with individuals with special needs, songwriting and listening in reminiscence/orientation work with the elderly, processing and relaxation work, and rhythmic entrainment for physical rehabilitation in stroke victims.

Story of a Seventeen Year-Old Student Nurse

After seventeen years of my entire life, I experienced a lot of things. I experienced happiness, loneliness, being angry and frustrated and being frightened. Happy in a manner that you are doing a great job, gaining friends, learning something unique and being in-love with someone. I experienced being in-love and I always think that either I well pass or not. If I pass, I will have a girlfriend but if not, I will have a girlfriend too. So in either case, I will have a girlfriend. I always think positive when I try a risk problem in my life because I believe that trying is the best way to become happy. Last two years I tried courting a girl and finally we have been in a relationship. But we did not last forever; we just become girlfriend/boyfriend in a couple of months.

When I’m with my friends and we are always discussing of what we will eat. If it pizza or not. If we eat pizza, nothings left from our money but if not, nothings left from our money too. In either case, nothings will be left on our money. If I eat pizza it cost more than five hundred pesos but if I do not eat pizza I would buy something to eat and it my cost also a five hundred peso bill and nothings will be left on our money.

When I’m going to study in La Consolacion College-Pasig to become a grade school student it is either I would go to school or not. If I would go, then I my parents would be proud on me but if not they would be disappointment on there side. In either case my parents would be proud on me or would be disappointment on there side. In the end, I chose going to school because I want to learned a lot and explore the world. I enjoy lots in that school because I experienced friendship from different people. I felt joy and bonding with my classmates and I learned a lot from them and at the same time they learned something from me. I think that our friendship will last forever.

When I am in Grade six I think that I should study well so that it is either I would be honor or not. If I would be an honor, then I can be proud on myself with my friends and family that would be glad but if not, they would not appraise me. So in either case, I can be proud on myself with my friends and family that would be glad or they would not appraise me. In the end, I become and honor student because I study well and hard. First, I am not expecting that I would not be honor but in the end my principal told me that I am involved in the awarding for honor. Gradually, I am first honorable mentioned in that time. I am third highest in our batch and I finally thank God with my family and friends that always support me for everything. I could say that this moment is the best from all that I have experienced.

Being sad is composed of problems and anxiety. So if I am sad I could have problems or anxiety. If I have a problem, then I would find a solution if I have anxiety I would try to get more information to somebody. In either case I would find a solution or I would try to get more information to somebody. I experienced being sad when I have failed to do something in my life. Like, if I am not satisfied with my grades I felt sadness and I would find a solution to that. I would strive harder to become a good student. Like now, I am a student nurse; I should study harder and give my best because I will be saving lives in the future. With this, I should act perfectly so that I could save peoples lives. Nurses should be curious and has compassion to others.

Religion issue - "Faith"

“Conversation of the Atheist Professor and the Christian Student”

The event started everything under the sun. The conversation is all about the Atheist professor and the Christian Student. It started when the professor questions the student if he do believed in God and the student answer was yes. Then the professor questions the student if God is good and powerful and the answer was yes again. But the professor questions him that his brother died because of cancer and he asked to heal his brother but God did not do it. Therefore, the professors opinion is opposite on the answer of the student. He is not satisfied that God is good and powerful.

Then, the professor talks about Satan and he is trying to tell that Satan comes from God which is a source of Evil. He tells also about the sickness, ugliness, and hatred that God created. He proved that God created curse on people. He also stated that how the student believes in God by not using his sensory perceptions. He does not felt, does not saw, tasted and hear God and according to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science that God does not exist. But the answer of the student is he has his own faith.

The student asked him if the professors know what is cold and darkness. But the professor said that the opposite of cold and darkness is heat and light which is wrong because it is only the absence of light and heat. We have heat, superheat, mega heat, little heat or no heat but there is no such thing as cold. Cold is just a word that describes the absence of heat. We have flashlight, bright light, normal light, and low light but there is no such thing as darkness. Darkness is just a word that describes the absence of light. The student proved that the philosophical premise is flawed, meaning it is false. He uses the premise of duality, meaning he believed that he compares the two words which is not compatible. There is such heat but there is no such thing as cold. Therefore, the two should not be compared as one. Then, the student tells that the teacher is a preacher not a scientist because the professor teaches opinions not facts. It is because of teaching the evolution of man. It is an on-going endeavor that’s why it is an opinion only. It is not a fact that about his brain. He asks his classmates if they ever seen the professors brain. His classmates answers was no. Therefore, their professor does not have a brain and finally the professor loses because he said that the students should have faith so that they would think that the professor has a brain.

Not all things in this world are related only about “science”. Science cannot explain all the things in this world. Science is always using sensory perception to a thing to learn and believe it. How about if we are talking to God? Science deals only on reality. Therefore, God and Science should not be together as one because it is different. Science does not believe about God because they consider that God does not exist. Science cannot explain a single thought like electricity and magnetism because it is never been seen and much less fully understood either one. To know Science we use our sensory perception but to know God we use our Faith. We should not base our Religion on Science. For example, the bible said that man came from God while science has a theory of Evolution wherein man came from a monkey. In the bible and theory of evolution, they did not see it so there is no exact fact that we came from God and we evolved from a monkey. But we believe on the bible because we have faith in ourselves. As Christians, our faith is needed because it is one thing that gives communication between God and us. We should not ask for miracles to believe in God because everyday in our life is a form of miracle. God is powerful because he created mankind. But we should not give all our responsibilities to Him. If you believe in Him then He believe in you. If you think that you cannot do certain job or opportunity, just think that God believes in you to inspire you to work on that job or opportunity. He knows what is good for us and He is always there beside us. If you are encountering problems in our life, just pray to God. Have faith in you. Believe that you can strive your problems even they are many. Do not blame God if you are encountering something, which you think are wrong. He knows what is best for you and He is always testing your faith in Him.

Health Talk - Blood Pressure

Let's talk about Health issues for awhile.Everything can be possible under the sun just be sure that your blood pressure is at normal state.

Blood pressure is a measure of how hard the blood pushes against the walls of your arteries as it moves through your body. Another name for high blood pressure is hypertension. When blood pressure is high, it starts to damage the blood vessels, heart, and kidneys. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, and other problems. High blood pressure is called a "silent killer,'' because it doesn't usually cause symptoms while it is causing this damage.

Hypertension can be classified either essential (primary) or secondary. Essential hypertension indicates that no specific medical cause can be found to explain a patient's condition. Secondary hypertension indicates that the high blood pressure is a result of another condition, such as kidney disease or tumours (pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma). Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and arterial aneurysm, and is a leading cause of chronic renal failure. Even moderate elevation of arterial blood pressure leads to shortened life expectancy. At severely high pressures, defined as mean arterial pressures 50% or more above average, a person can expect to live no more than a few years unless appropriately treated.

Your blood pressure consists of two numbers: systolic and diastolic. Someone with a systolic pressure of 120 and a diastolic pressure of 80 has a blood pressure of 120/80, or "120 over 80." The systolic number shows how hard the blood pushes when the heart is pumping. The diastolic number shows how hard the blood pushes between heartbeats, when the heart is relaxed and filling with blood.

Adults should have a blood pressure of less than 120/80. High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. Many people fall into the category in between, called prehypertension (Systolic of 120-139 and Diastolic of 80-89). Stage 1 hypertension has a BP reading of 140-159 Systolic pressure and 90-99 Diastolic pressure. Stage 2 hypertension has a BP reading of more than or equal to 160 Systolic pressure and more than or equal to 100 Diastolic pressure.

Several things are known to raise blood pressure, including being very overweight, drinking too much alcohol, having a family history of high blood pressure, eating too much salt, and getting older. Your blood pressure may also rise if you are not very active, you don't eat enough potassium and calcium, or you have a condition called insulin resistance.

Without treatment, high blood pressure can damage the heart, brain, kidneys, or eyes. This damage causes problems like coronary artery disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Very high blood pressure can cause headaches, vision problems, nausea, and vomiting. Malignant high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis), which is blood pressure that rises very fast, can also cause these symptoms. Malignant high blood pressure is a medical emergency.

Most people find out they have high blood pressure during a routine doctor visit. For your doctor to confirm that you have high blood pressure, your blood pressure must be at least 140/90 on three or more separate occasions. It is usually measured 1 to 2 weeks apart.

Philippines have the highest death rate for hypertension in the region. According to the latest survey from the Department of Health, Hypertension ranked as the 5th highest in morbidity rate to both sexes. Heart diseases and vascular system diseases ranked 1st and 2nd in the mortality rate of both sexes in the Philippines.
